Tonganoxie High School will host a summer basketball league for the first time this summer. Games started Tuesday night.
Typically, each summer, those who wanted to play summer basketball would go to Sport-2-Sport in Lawrence.
"We decided that it would be neat if we could get it here in Tongie," said David Walker, high school coach.
So Walker and others are preparing to run a summer league. Six teams will compete every Tuesday and Thursday, with games beginning at 6 p.m., for the month of June. On July 3, the top four teams will compete in a championship tournament.
Tonganoxie has two teams. Bonner Springs also has two teams, Leavenworth one and Basehor one. Each team has a limit of 10 people. Most are at that or just shy of it, Walker said.
As with any summer league, high school coaches will not be allowed to participate. In fact, the teams will have no coaches. Players will rotate into the games fairly as directed by the scorer's table.
Walker is looking forward to all the summer league games.
"We'll be very competitive," he said. "We'll be able to use this as a tool to get better as a team. I'll be there to watch and observe. It gives coaches a chance to sit back and watch."
