John J. Brezgiel Jr.


Private family services are planned for John J. Brezgiel Jr., 73, Leavenworth.

Mr. Brezgiel's body was found Tuesday, March 6, 2001. He was last seen in Sept. 20, 2000, when sheriff's officers said he died a traffic accident as he drove home from Leavenworth.

He was born March 21, 1927, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of John J. and Pearl Hesler Brezgiel Sr.

He entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Normandy invasion and later in the South Pacific. He was given the Purple Heart personally by Eleanor Roosevelt. After discharge from the Navy, he began working at the Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital in Leavenworth as an electrician. He retired in 1973.

He was active on the farm, raising angus cattle. He was a member of the St. Casimir Catholic Church, the St. Casimir Men's Club, the Eagle's Arie No. 55 in Leavenworth.

He married Scotty L. Gates on Aug. 3, 1963, at the St. Casimir Catholic Church in Leavenworth. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Peter John Brezgiel, Lee's Summit, Mo.; a daughter, Shawn Johnson, Leavenworth; six sisters, Clara Bolsenga, North Kansas City, Mo., Agnes Bolewski, Leavenworth, Rose Nudeck, Independence, Mo., Martha Brown, Kansas City, Kan., Elizabeth Gorski, Topeka, and Helen Roe, Manhattan, Kan., and two grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Casimir Catholic Church or Leavenworth County Senior Services Center Inc., sent in care of Barnett-Larkin-Brown Funeral Home, 707 S. Sixth, Leavenworth, 66048.
