John Michael "Stick" Downing

1942-2001

Services for John Michael "Stick" Downing, 58, Gardner, were Monday, March 26, 2001, at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner. Burial was in Gardner Cemetery.

Mr. Downing died Friday, March 23, 2001, at his home. He was born Aug. 8, 1942, in Merriam, the son of Milton M. and Mary Louise Kelly Downing. He moved to Gardner in the late 1970s. He also had lived in Bonner Springs and he graduated from Basehor High School.

Mr. Downing was a mechanic and engineer on Chinook helicopters at New Century Air Center. He retired in 1993. As a young man, he worked for his father's automotive battery service in Kansas City, Kan.

In 1963, he enlisted in the Army Reserve National Guard. He retired as a first sergeant in 1988. He served from May 1968 to August 1969 in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Carson, Colo.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Gardner.

He married Melissa "Diane" Inscore Downing on Feb. 14, 1980, in Miami, Okla. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Steve Staley, Baldwin, and Mike Staley, Olathe; his mother, of Lansing; a brother, Bernard Downing, Wichita; two sisters, Joane Aaron, Leavenworth, and Loretta Kirchhofer, Wakarusa; and two grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Kansas City Hospice, sent in care of Bruce Funeral home, 106 S. Center, Gardner, 66030.
