Advance balloting available for election

By Caroline Trowbridge - | May 9, 2001

Advanced voting is under way for the May 22 special election in Tonganoxie.

Any registered voter may vote by advance ballot before the election, without specifying a reason, according to Linda Scheer, Leavenworth County clerk.

On May 22, voters in Tonganoxie will go to the polls to determine whether the city clerk can live in Leavenworth County, as well as adjoining counties. The city passed a charter ordinance that would allow the clerk to live in adjoining counties, but that ordinance was challenged by a protest petition, forcing the election.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 22.

But registered voters may cast ballots in advance.

Scheer stressed that all voters must first complete an application form requesting to vote by advance ballot. Applications are available at the clerk’s office in the Leavenworth County Courthouse, as well as at the county annex, city hall and the library, all in Tonganoxie. Applications also can be mailed to voters, Scheer said.

The deadline for the clerk to mail voting ballots is 5 p.m. May 18. And advance ballots must be returned to the clerk’s office by 7 p.m. on Election Day.

No one may apply for ballots on behalf of someone else. However, a sick, disabled or illiterate voter may request a ballot and be assisted by another person as long as that person files an affidavit of assistance with Scheer’s office.

Voters may complete their ballots at the clerk’s office in the courthouse by noon May 21.
