Cable TV upgrade in the works

May 23, 2001

Work will continue during the next several months on an upgrade to the cable television system that serves Tonganoxie.

But by the end of the year, digital service should be available locally, according to Tom Evans, director of engineering for Sunflower Cablevision of Lawrence.

Currently, workers are laying new fiber-optic lines along Kansas Highway 32. During the next few weeks, additional work will begin in Tonganoxie, as crews work to upgrade the system throughout the city.

"Probably the middle of next month, you'll be seeing the number of crews pick up," Evans said. "Our drop-dead date is the end of the year."

In Tong-anoxie, a total of 34 miles of cable lines will be upgraded. As work is under way on the project, cable service should continue, uninterrupted.

"If people experience an interruption," Evans said, "they need to call so we can get it taken care of."

Once Tonganoxie is on line, he said, other communities in the area will follow.

"Linwood will follow Tonganoxie rather rapidly," Evans said. "And then in 2002, we'll go ahead with the existing stuff in Leavenworth County."

Included in next year's upgrade will be the Basehor area.
