Albert William Kerns

Services for Albert William Kerns, 74, Tonganoxie, will be 7 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, in the east shelter house at the Leavenworth County State Lake. His body was donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Cremation and private inurnment will follow.

Mr. Kerns died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at his home in Tonganoxie.

He was born May 6, 1927, in Sidney, Ohio, the son of Albert and Florence (Shafer) Kerns. He retired in 1984 as produce manager for B&J Thriftway, Tonganoxie, and later worked for the store’s Amoco gasoline station. He served in the Navy and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a Boy Scout leader for Troop 0375, all of Tonganoxie, and a member of the National Campers and Hikers Association.

On Nov. 10, 1953, he married Opal Black in Emporia. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Mark Kerns, out of state, and Mike Kerns, Oskaloosa; a daughter, Mona Hamby, Tonganoxie; a brother, Carl Kerns, Lima, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.
