Tonganoxie Municipal Court
Tonganoxie resident Steve Trieb has been ordered to pay $100 fines on each of three charges that he was violating the city’s nuisance ordinances. City officials cited Trieb for these properties: a commercial tract at the southwest corner of Laming Road and Leavenworth County Road 5; a commercial lot in the 300 block of Main Street just north of Glen’s Opry; and Trieb’s home at 204 Main. Judge William Pray imposed the fines during a hearing Thursday. “The enforcing officer said there were a couple of things he wanted him to get picked up at his home, and the judge gave him until Dec. 6,” said Karen Daniels, municipal court clerk. “The judge told him to be assured if it hasn’t been done, it will be $100 a day.”

A rural Tonganoxie couple have entered guilty pleas in connection with a marijuana growing operation at their home in the 18500 block of 246th Street. Jarrod Sommer has pled guilty to a felony charge of cultivation of marijuana, while his wife, Jackie Sommer, has pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana. Both originally were charged with three felony drug counts and two misdemeanor drug counts. They were arrested May 18 at their home, after sheriff’s officers discovered a marijuana-growing operation in the basement of a building on the couple’s property. Officers said the 154 pounds of cultivated marijuana that was discovered, including 757 plants and dried marijuana, would have a street value of more than $385,600. Officers said they also seized about $13,000 in cash, as well as a 9 mm handgun and a .40-caliber handgun. Sentencing for the couple is scheduled for 9 a.m. Dec. 3.

A Kansas City man faces several charges in connection with an Oct. 25 burglary and chase along U.S. Highway 24-40 between Basehor and Tonganoxie. Tommy D. Powell, 30, has been charged with residential burglary, theft, criminal damage to property, felony fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless driving and possession of stolen property. According to Roger Marrs, deputy county attorney, Powell originally identified himself as Darrell Smith, but a fingerprint analysis conducted by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation revealed that was an alias. Powell allegedly broke into a home on 155th Street and was followed by Basehor Mayor Bill Hooker, who also alerted Basehor police. Officers joined in the chase, which ended when the 1986 Chevy Caprice that Powell was driving ran into a Tonganoxie police car, causing about $3,000 in damage to the cruiser. A preliminary hearing for Powell is scheduled for 10 a.m. today.

The two weapon and marijuana sentences were ordered to run concurrent with the cocaine charge. The drug charges stemmed from a 2000 case, and the weapon charge was lodged after he tried to take a .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun into the justice center.
