Hutchinson Community College desperately needed a kicker and punter after last season.

Tonganoxie had both.

HCC signed Ryan Lowe after the Dragons were 0-for-9 in field goals last year and averaged 30 yards per punt. Against Highland on Sept. 15, Lowe kicked Hutchinson’s first field goal in more than a year and helped the Dragons outlast the Scotties, 17-13. He added another field goal against Butler County in a 43-10 loss Saturday and is 2-for-4 on the season.

He is also 6-for-7 on PAT attempts, with the biggest one coming Saturday against the Grizzlies. HCC’s Dwight Devaughn returned an interception for a touchdown, but was called for excessive celebration. A personal foul was also tacked on and Lowe had to kick a 50-yard extra point. He made it with plenty of distance.

Lowe ranks fifth in the league in field goals and fourth in PATs. The former Chieftain also has helped the Dragons in punting. Against Highland, Lowe had a 42-yard punt, along with a 32-yard punt that pinned the Scotties on their own three.

Against Independence in the season opener, Lowe had three kicks downed inside the 10-yard line.

The strong start follows a successful career at Tonganoxie. Lowe had two 50-yard field goals and was a major asset for the Chieftains. THS coach Mark Elston said Lowe’s ability caused problems for opponents.

“We had several field goals out of him, but the major contribution was his threat of a field goal,” Elston said.

Opponents couldn’t allow the Chieftains inside the 30 because that was within Lowe’s range.

Kickoff returns were usually minimal against Lowe last year as well.

Opponents usually started their offensive series around their own 20-yard line.
