Volunteer firefighters host open house

The Delaware Township Volunteer Fire Department will host an open house as part of its Fire Prevention Week activities from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The fire station is at 111 E. Kansas Ave., in front of the Lansing Correctional Facility in Lansing. The Delaware Township Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will also be sponsoring a bake sale at the open house.

This all-volunteer fire department serves the city of Lansing and the townships of Delaware and High Prairie, as well as the Lansing Correctional Facility.

With 26 members and six pieces of fire apparatus, the department is one of 13 departments in the county. The department's members respond to an average of more than 400 emergency calls a year.

Re-enactors to give Civil War program

The history of Civil War medicine will be presented at the Tonganoxie Community Historical Society at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. This will be the third meeting to bring special guests in for the programs.

Herschel and Jacque Stroud, Civil War re-enactors, will present the program, posing as a physician and his wife, who serves as a nurse. They will dress in authentic Civil War attire and will tell what it was like to practice medicine in the Union Army and to care for the sick and wounded in rudimentary recuperation hospitals.

The Strouds have participated in Civil War reenactments, including Gettysburg's 135th memorial re-enactment.

The Tonganoxie Historical Site is at 201 W. Washington.

Tonganoxie PTA plans two meetings

The Tonganoxie Parent Teacher Association has two meeting scheduled this week.

The first meeting, set for 7 p.m. tonight in the music room of Tonganoxie Elementary School, will be the first general meeting of the year. The Cool Kids Choir will perform and teachers' scholarships will be awarded. Dues are $5 per member per year.

An educational meeting for parents will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the same room.

A speaker from the Kansas Guidance Center, Leavenworth, will speak about drug and alcohol use in adolescents. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Recycling scheduled for Saturday morning

The next SORT recycling date will be from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds in Tonganoxie.

The Bear Den and first-year Webelos of Cub Scout Pack No. 3075 will volunteer at the drop-off.

The next recycling date will be Nov. 10.
