Soccer team goes 2-3 during rugged week

By Shawn Linenberger - | Oct 10, 2001

The soccer marathon is finished.
Tonganoxie, which played six games in nine days, finally gets a slight breather. The Chieftains were 2-3 during the stretch of regular and make-up games.
The busy schedule concluded Tuesday with a home game against De Soto. Results from that game will appear in next week’s Mirror.
Tonganoxie never got on a streak during the run. The Chieftains lost to Free State 4-0 on Oct. 1, beat Perry-Lecompton 3-0 on Oct. 2, lost to Lansing 2-0 on Saturday, beat Piper 2-1 Saturday, and lost to Lansing again Monday, 3-0.
“This was the first game I didn’t think they had any legs left,” Tonganoxie coach Harold Pittman said after Monday’s game.
Tonganoxie stayed with Lansing in the first 20 minutes, but the Lions scored in the 22nd minute, then added two more goals for the win.
The Lansing game on Monday continued friction between the two teams.
Tempers flared and words were exchanged Thursday at Lansing between Lions fans and Tonganoxie players.
The teams weren’t overly friendly toward each other, either. A Lansing player received a warning card Monday.
“I’m sure things were said that weren’t too polite between our players and their fans,” Pittman said. “I’m glad people watching on our own turf didn’t return the favor.”
On the field, Pittman said Tonganoxie played a little better at Lansing on Thursday. The team couldn’t get shots off early Monday as they did last Thursday.
“That ball drops at their feet,” Pittman said about the Lions. “They’re going to be the team to beat in the postseason.”
The Chieftains, now 4-7-1, take on Piper on Friday for Senior Night on Friday. Junior varsity starts at 4 p.m.; varsity begins at 5:30 p.m.
