Tonganoxie teams do well in youth soccer
The Leavenworth County Soccer Leagues finished their seasons during the weekend, and Tonganoxie teams competed in most finals.
In the 10-and-younger girls league, a Tonganoxie team, coached by Jenee Wilbanks, defeated a Lansing team 4-0 for the championship at Chieftain Park on Saturday. For the boys championship, Bob DeHoff's team won 2-1 against another Tonganoxie team coached by Kurt Young and Wendall Espeland.
In the 12-and-younger division, the girls' tournament had Tonganoxie teams in the top two spots. In a five-team round-robin, Jim McCaffrey's team defeated Paul Gripka's team 1-0. On the boys' side, a Tonganoxie team coached by Gregg Sparks beat a Platte City, Mo., team 3-0. Those games were also played at Chieftain Park last weekend.
A Tonganoxie team was in the semifinals of the 14-and-younger co-ed tournament in Leavenworth last weekend as well. Mark Nowasell coaches that team.
TJHS girls basketball opens Friday
The Tonganoxie Junior High School girls' basketball season starts Friday when the Warriors host Xavier at the junior high gymnasium. Games start at 4 p.m.
Among the eighth-grade A and B, and seventh-grade A and B teams, the Warriors' season includes 26 games in 16 dates.
Phil Jeannin and Julie Frank coach the Warriors' seventh-grade teams.
Team members include Rachel and Rebecca Bogard, Sara Briggs, Mallory Cartwright, Devon Daily, Casey Davis, Flor Flores, Holly Heintzelman, Emily Hughes, Kezia Huseman, Crystal Jordan, Alex Kissinger, Sarah Kotowske, Tana Lloyd, Sammie McDaniel, Aimee Ostermeyer, Ali Pistoria, Annie Riddle, Sara Schlicht, Elizabeth Seymour, Laura Shuster, Sam Shutts, Shannon Smith, Riley Vogel and Jennifer Wagner.
John Korb and Bill Shaw coach the eighth-graders.
Players are: Rachael Cain, Amanda Elliott, Tabitha Flaherty, Joey Glenn, Maggie Gratny, Sarah Hartshorn, Elizabeth Higbee, Kalie Hileman, Victoria King, Sarah Larson, Amanda Lenon, Katie Long, Leah Peterson, Alison Radke, Paige Robinson, Jessica Shockey and Kelly Stauch.
St. Mary basketball to have clinic Nov. 3
Spires Basketball Buddies, a club for St. Mary College basketball fans in grades kindergarten through eighth grade, will have a clinic for members on Nov. 3.
