Reading night focuses on families

Area residents are invited to a "Family Reading Night" on Thursday at Tonganoxie Elementary School.

The event, sponsored by the Tonganoxie Parent Teacher Association, will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the south gym of the school.

Going along with the theme, "Welcome to Dreamland," everyone is invited to wear their favorite pajamas and take their favorite, books, pillows, blankets and sleeping bags.

Guest readers from the community will read their favorite books to children. Throughout the evening, drawings for prizes will be held. Also, the pajama-wearers will vie for prizes with judges deciding who has the most outrageous pair and the cutest pair of pajamas.

Fire district plan will be discussed

The Delaware Township Volunteer Fire Department will hold a town hall meeting to present to the public the proposed fire district plan.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday and at 6 p.m. Sept. 23 at the 4-H Building in Lansing, on the corner of 4-H Road and Kansas Highway 7.

The fire district is being proposed as a means of providing the areas of Lansing city, Delaware and High Prairie townships with a fire department that can and will face the challenges of the new millennium. The department, while physically located in Lansing, provides fire protection to the township and contracts services with Lansing City and High Prairie Township. This total area covers approximately 78 square miles.

Benefits for all three entities will be discussed. The governing boards of Delaware and High Prairie townships are supporting this proposal. The creation of a fire district would necessitate the creation of a separate "fire board" to govern the fire department. The fire board would be the taxing authority for fire protection only and would consist of representatives from the areas represented.
