Soccer team breaks win comlumn at De Soto
THS scores season’s first goals against Wildcats, plays host to Mill Valley on Thursday
That invisible shield on the opposing goal has been lifted for Tonganoxie.
After starting the season scoreless in two games, the Chieftains defeated De Soto 2-1 last Thursday at De Soto.
Tonganoxie didn't waste much time against the Wildcats. Senior Pat Weyer scored on an assist from sophomore Nick Volk in the 13th minute of the first half.
The Chieftains, though, found themselves at square one again after De Soto senior Willie Meier scored a little more than four minutes later.
The deadlock continued for much of the second half, but Tonganoxie didn't allow what would have been its second overtime game this season. In the 30th minute of the second half, freshman Travis Schultz on a second chance after Kevin Colon couldn't convert his shot on the goal.
Tonganoxie held on in the final 10 minutes and evened its record at 1-1-1. THS coach Harold Pittman was excited to get the first goal and first win of the young season.
"We scored," Pittman said. "Not only that, we played as a team."
Pittman's one concern was mid-field transition. Once the team got in position, he said the team was fine, but couldn't settle at mid-field.
The Chieftains get ready for their home opener after its original opener against Free State was postponed because of lightning Aug. 30.
THS takes on Mill Valley on Thursday at Chieftain Park.
