Several vehicles burglarized

September 26, 2001

Several vehicles in the southwestern corner of Leavenworth County were burglarized last Thursday night.

"It appears all of them were unlocked," said Sgt. Charlie Yates of the Leavenworth County sheriff's department. "Two of them were inside a garage, and the garage was entered."

Yates offered these tips to area residents in an effort to help prevent future vehicle burglaries:

Lock your vehicle. "People need to secure them and keep items in the trunk or out of view in the vehicle that would draw the attention of suspects," Yates said.

Park in a well-lit area. "Sometimes, in rural areas, that's difficult," Yates said.

Pay attention if your dog is barking or if you hear an unusual noise.

Yates said that last week's burglaries are under investigation.

"Whether it's local people involved or people who came out of Lawrence and were driving around, we just don't know right now," he said.
