Students practice skills, support KU team

By Staff | Apr 3, 2002

Tonganoxie third-graders got an early start Thursday cheering for the Kansas Jayhawk basketball team.

Students in Kim Laverentz’s class made Jayhawk puppets by piecing together Jayhawks onto paper sacks.

The project, Laverentz said, took about an hour.

“It was a lot of following directions,” Laverentz said.

Once they finished their project, the students walked downtown, making stops at First State Bank and Trust and Dr. Dean’s Optometrists, and at other businesses on Fourth Street.

Laverentz’s class also took a field trip Tuesday to Lawrence for its social studies class. The students are studying goods and services, and the class went to Waxman Candles and Lawrence Memorial Hospital, along with the Lawrence Visitors Center for historical purposes.

On Thursday, the students said they wanted to take their Jayhawk puppets to Lawrence, and one student, Justin Soetaert, had a prediction for Saturday’s game.

“KU, 95-86,” Soetaert said.

Although the score was almost on the money, the Terrapins won, 97-88.
