Baseball team falls at Jeff West

By Shawn Linenberger - | Apr 10, 2002

Jeff West lost by one run to eventual state champion Hayden in last year’s sub-state competition.

The Tigers finished the season with that loss to the Wildcats, but Tonganoxie couldn’t extend Jeff West’s losing streak into this season.

Jeff West, playing at home, defeated Tonganoxie on April 2, 13-3 and 12-1, in the season opening doubleheader for both teams.

“They’re a good team to start off with,” THS coach John Lee said.

Tonganoxie was tied with Jeff West 2-2 after three innings, but the Tigers scored four runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth. The scoring output forced the mercy rule and the game ended in five innings.

The Chieftains had three runs on four hits in the first game and turned two double plays. THS, though, also committed six errors in the loss.

In game two, Tonganoxie’s defense improved. The Chieftains committed just two errors, and the offense started quickly. Tonganoxie had its first three runners reach base, but one was picked off, another hit the ball back to the pitcher and the third struck out, ending the early threat.

The Tigers scored in each of the five innings in game two.

Kelly Woelk led Tonganoxie’s offense in the doubleheader. He went 2-for-5 with a single, a double and two RBI. Pat Weyer was 1-for-5 with a double, Zach Sanders went 1-for-5 with a single and an RBI, Pat Weyer was also 1-for-5 with a double and Kyle Mayse went 1-for-3 on the day.

The Chieftains, now 0-2, were scheduled to play at Piper Monday, but rain postponed the game. It will be made up April 26.

Tonganoxie’s next competition will now start at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Chieftains’ home opening doubleheader against Mill Valley.
