By Staff | Apr 24, 2002

Staff members at The Mirror newspaper won numerous awards at the Kansas Press Association’s 2002 Awards of Excellence contest.

The staff members’ honors included six first-place awards. The Mirror’s 23 awards were presented Saturday at the 110th annual KPA Convention and Trade Show in Wichita.

Receiving first-place awards were Caroline Trowbridge, Lisa Scheller and Shawn Linenberger.

Trowbridge won first in government coverage for a package on last spring’s school and city elections in Tonganoxie. The judges said, “This section delved into exactly the kind of information voters need when they take to the polls. It was evident that a lot of time and energy went into putting this section together.”

Trowbridge also won first place in news writing for a story about the discovery of a prehistoric home in Leavenworth County. “Story is well-thought-out, informative. Flow is great. You allowed your subject to tell the story,” the judges said.

Scheller won three first-place awards. Her story on Waneta and Herman Karriker’s retirement from the Tonganoxie Assembly of God Church. The judges said, “The writing paints a vivid picture of the church, and the writer gives us an insight into the congregation.”

Scheller’s other first-place honors were for her photography. A photograph of young Jackson Willis at last June’s Tonganoxie Days celebration captured the judges’ attention, and they described it as “excellent.” A photo package on 2001 Tonganoxie High School graduation also earned the judges’ praise and first-place honors. “Emotion is abundant during graduation ceremonies, and the photographer does an excellent job of reflecting it in her work. Great job. She made an annual event something for readers and seniors to celebrate.”

Linenberger’s first-place honor was for a column he wrote on the role of sports in children’s lives. The judges said, “Columnist does a good job outline in the role sports should play in society with a humorous touch. Well-written.”
