Teams ready for another active season

August 28, 2002

Tonganoxie High School teams have a week of practice out of the way, but most still have plenty of time to dust off any rust.

THS soccer, though, will have to be polished soon. The red/white intrasquad scrimmage was Tuesday; the regular season begins Friday at home against Mill Valley.

Chieftain coach Harold Pittman said the team should be ready, but conditioning could be a factor with less time to prepare.

"So far it hasn't," Pittman said. "But I can tell you after the game."

Pittman said his team has really developed its midfield and has been working extensively on specific offensive and defensive drills. After being at home Friday against the Jaguars, Tonganoxie won't be back at Chieftain Park until Sept. 9 when the team plays Lansing. THS travels Tuesday to Bonner Springs and Sept. 12 to Perry-Lecompton.

Cross country

Practice started early for some cross country athletes. THS runners had optional training schedules that started in July and involved anywhere from 10 to 20 miles per week and up to 30 miles when actual fall practice began last week.

THS coach Phil Williams said the team is gradually getting prepared for its first meet, a home quadrangular Sept. 5.

"Some of the kids didn't cover as many miles over the summer as they should have so they're trying to get used to it.

"It's something kids have to put on themselves."

Some runners, though, have run a substantial number miles during the summer, and Williams said they've been looking good.

The team will have a red/white run at 4 p.m. Friday.

Coach Tiffany Parker and her squad will have to wait until Sept. 12 to get the season started. They'll be at home in a quadrangular.

The Chieftains recently finished two-a-day practices, and Parker said the team hasn't experienced any injuries, just fatigue.

With the opening match still two weeks away, THS is still experimenting with lineups. And, to work on leadership, Parker has divided the team into various squads, with seniors being dispersed among them.

"It gets our seniors to be leaders because we split them up," Parker said.

The team will have a red/white scrimmage Friday at 5 p.m.

With a scrimmage out of the way Saturday, the Chieftains will have one more scrimmage the red/white game Friday at Beatty Field.

The game will be the team's final tune-up before it opens the season Sept. 6 against Wamego.

Tonganoxie's scrimmage begins at 7 p.m. Friday.
