Aunt Norie’s Sewing Room

By Eleanor Mckee - | Dec 18, 2002

“My earliest memories: Oh, yes, climbing around in the hay searching for eggs.” This from Judy Kennedy. She grew up near Whiting, Kan., has many fond memories of those days going to Topeka to shop, to the big 4-H fair. “Oh and I well remember the year Elvis came out, I was struggling to learn to sew. I used to work in a nursing home, and now here I am in one.”

Judy is very upbeat, busy and happy recovering from a stroke.

“It’s been two years now. I’d gone to Utah to visit my son, when just out of the blue : ” she said. “But now they have me walking again and doing all sorts of things.” She talked as she worked on a jig saw puzzle.

I also visited with Irma Smith, their beauty operator. Her husband had retired, she’d sold her beauty shop, when they asked her if she would consider filling in until they found someone else. “That was 14 years ago,” she said. “I love it here. It’s been the most rewarding job I ever had. They are all like family to me. So many of them have even become like another mother to me.”

Irma would like to get a message out to all, just how important your visits are to our loved ones here. And how heartbreaking it is to know some of the residents never have visitors, asking, “Please even if you have no one here, stop in to visit, to make a new friend, or to volunteer. It’s so very rewarding.”

Merry Christmas to all. Love, Aunt Norie, P.O. Box 265, Tonganoxie, 66086-0265.
