Obituary: Neil Edward Westphal
Graveside services for Neil Edward Westphal, 92, Tonganoxie, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Green Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Kansas City, Mo., with the Rev. Georgette Shoemaker officiating.
Mr. Westphal died early Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 16, 1910, at Hawkeye, Iowa, the son of Henry John and Phoebe Samantha Reams Westphal.
He had lived in Tonganoxie since 1998, moving from Oskaloosa, where he had lived since 1995. He had lived in the Stanwood Community east of McLouth for 14 years.
Mr. Westphal was a switchman for 30 years for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. He retired in 1972.
He was a member of the Milford, Mo., Christian Church and was a member of the Henri Masonic Lodge 190, AF&AM of Tonganoxie. He was a 1929 graduate of Hatfield (Mo.) High School and he attended the Kearney, Nebraska Teacher's College.
He married Pauline Frances Myers on Nov. 15, 1935, in Kansas City, Mo. She died on Sept. 23, 1996.
Survivors include a son, Jack Westphal, Osklaoosa; two daughters, Naomi McAfee, Harrison, Ark., and Winnie Groshong, Tonganoxie; eight grandchildren; and 11 grandchildren. A son, Jerry Westphal, died earlier.
Friends may call after 11 a.m. today at Barnett Funeral Home, 820 Liberty, Oskaloosa, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
