Boys claim home win after break
Tonganoxie forces Basehor-Linwood to commit 23 turnovers
Basehor-Linwood's return to basketball was rusty Monday at Tonganoxie.
The Bobcats committed 18 first-half turnovers in their first game since Jan. 22, and their miscues helped Tonganoxie go on a 17-4 tear in the second quarter en route to a 71-54 win. The Bobcats finished with 23 turnovers, compared to Tonganoxie's 17.
The Bobcats shot 47 percent from the field and made 11 of 14 free throws.
Basehor-Linwood (1-13 overall and 1-9 in the Kaw Valley League) trailed 18-12 after the first quarter, but couldn't recover from a 35-16 halftime deficit.
Final totals showed that Tonganoxie (7-7 and 6-4) actually shot slightly worse than Basehor-Linwood at 45 percent, but made 27 shots, compared to the Bobcats' 19.
The bad weather kept the Chieftains out of the gym most of last week, but THS coach David Walker said practice during the weekend helped his team on Monday.
"We came out with intensity," Walker said. "I was proud of our guys. They stayed focus."
Walker told his players to treat the game as if it were the season opener or the first game back from winter break. Tonganoxie, or more specifically Bryan Gurss, responded.
The Chieftain senior scored Tonganoxie's first eight points. Tonganoxie, though, spread its scoring evenly after that. The Chieftains, who also hadn't played in nearly two weeks, had 11 players score in its KVL win. Gurss was the team's leading scorer with 13 points. The Chieftains were also 8 of 12 from the free throw line.
Despite trailing 57-26 after three quarters, the Bobcats scored 28 fourth-quarter points, while holding THS to 14.
"They're one of the hardest working teams in the league," Walker said about Basehor-Linwood.
Basehor's John Grube scored a game-high 14 points, while Brian Gripka added 11.
The Bobcats are idle until Friday when No. 10 Piper comes to Basehor.
Tonganoxie played Lansing on Tuesday and is off Friday, but will play Immaculata next Tuesday in Tonganoxie. The results of the Lansing game will appear in next week's edition of The Mirror.
