Lions handle THS boys

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 13, 2002

Tonganoxie came out in the first half against Basehor-Linwood on Feb. 4 attacking the Bobcats with a pressure defense that caused 18 turnovers and an offense that built a 19-point lead at halftime.

One night later, the Chieftains appeared to be the prey.

Lansing pressed Tonganoxie often and bolted to a 17-8 lead after the first quarter. The Chieftains fought back, but couldn’t contain the Lions late, and Lansing won, 61-49.

“We didn’t come out with the same intensity in the first half,” THS coach David Walker said. “We can’t do that with a team of this quality.”

Despite having a flat first half, the Chieftains responded in the third quarter, cutting Lansing’s lead to two. The Lions, though, answered in the fourth, as the lead ballooned back to double digits. Lansing improved to 11-5 overall and 8-4 in the Kaw Valley League with the win. Tonganoxie fell back below .500 at 7-8 overall. The Chieftains are 6-4 in the KVL.

Bryan Gurss scored a game-high 18 points, while Thomas Gilner (13) and Shane Howard (9) also led the Chieftains. Lansing was led by Joey McKee with 15 and Thomas Davis with 14.

Tonganoxie plays at 10-4 Santa Fe Trail on Friday. Tonganoxie was off for a week before playing De Soto last night, which gave the Chieftains a full week to re-group.

“We’ll get an opportunity to see other teams play,” Walker said after the Lansing game.

More importantly, Walker could see other sub-state team’s play. Only Perry-Lecompton and Lansing are familiar foes at this year’s sub-state in Hiawatha. Atchison, Maur Hill, Hiawatha, Holton and Jefferson West are other participants. The Chieftains have four regular season games left before sub-state begins Feb. 25.
