Poem by center resident stirs up fond memories

Editor’s note: Ruth Garrison is a resident at the Tonganoxie Nursing Center.

Remembrance

By Ruth Garrison

Memories are a brain’s review

Of impressions left on you.

The ones my mother left behind

Will never leave me, she was kind.

She’d stay up nights till after one

To sew a dress I wanted done.

She’d make a pie or mix a cake,

Food I love but couldn’t bake.

She’d cry with me when I shed tears

Kept track of me throughout the years.

Her memories always take me back

To live again, that’s what I lack.

Remembrance is a blessed thing

What joyful thoughts they often bring.

To me approaching 93,

“Dear God, tell mom she cared for me.”

corn growers award

Jimmy R. Elder of Elder Farms near Linwood recently won first place in the Class A ridge-till non-irrigated division of the 2001 National Corn Growers’ Association corn yield contest in Kansas.

He planted the crop into 30-inch rows using a Case IH 955 six-row planter at a rate of 29,000 seeds per acre. He applied a total of 180 pounds of nitrogen and 34 pounds of phosphorous per acre to enhance fertility. He harvested the plot with a Case IH 1660 on Sept. 14.
