Richard Erickson, left, Tonganoxie superintendent, leads group from Tonganoxie on a tour last week of Glenwood Ridge Elementary School in the Basehor-Linwood school district.

About 15 district patrons who are involved in the school district’s building committee last Wednesday night toured Basehor-Linwood’s new Glenwood Ridge Elementary School and Basehor-Linwood High School.

Don Swartz, assistant superintendent for Basehor-Linwood, took the group on the tour.

Although the Tonganoxie school district has no immediate plans to build, the district owns a vacant 80 acres just east of the intersection of Pleasant Street and Evans Road, where a new school eventually could be constructed.

Board member Phil Weide said he thought the district could start by building a new school.

“Maybe it would be a K-4 with room to grow as the town grows. It’s the starting point, that’s the main thing,” Weide said.

He said he thought the public sentiment might be positive.

“America is in a rebuilding stage and what a great time to pass a bond issue,” Weide said.

Don Young, a former Tonganoxie school board member, wasn’t so positive.

“At this point I wouldn’t hazard a guess,” Young said. “Historically, Tonganoxie has been a tough city to get a bond issue through.”

Richard Reidel, another district patron on the school tour, said people like himself who are on fixed incomes might not be willing to raise taxes more.

He said this year’s rise in Social Security payments was equal to the amount his property taxes increased.
