Eudora wins tourney again, beats Van Horn

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 23, 2002

Van Horn’s Michael Lang carried the Tonganoxie Invitational’s Most Valuable Player award under one arm and his team on his back, but Lang didn’t have room for the team trophy.

Lang, scored a game-high 22 points Saturday against Eudora in the tournament finals, but four Cardinals scored in double figures as EHS won, 62-39. It was the Cardinals’ second consecutive tournament championship. Eudora also beat Van Horn (Independence, Mo.) in last year’s title game.

Lang was spectacular against Bonner Springs on Friday, scoring 38 points in a 69-66 overtime win. Fellow senior Charles Davis had 21 against Bonner Springs, but only four against Eudora.

Lang’s lower output surprised Eudora coach Scott Stein, but he thought his team followed its game plan.

“We did what we wanted to do stop their dribble penetration,” Stein said.

Lang had six of the Falcons’ eight points in the first quarter and Eudora led 9-8 going into the second. Van Horn’s closest deficit after that was five, and it was in the second quarter.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, didn’t have too much trouble attacking the basket. Zac Tyler led the team with 19 points 14 in the paint and five from the free-throw line. Kaleb Niedens (16), Wes Hinman (13) and Lear Bowling (10) also scored in double figures. Bowling’s duties included defending Lang.

“I thought Lear did a great job of guarding him,” Stein said.

Van Horn coach Phillip Bullocks said his team was flat after more offensive production one night earlier.

“Sometimes it’s like a lake and sometimes it’s like an eye of a needle,” Bullocks said about his team’s 31.9 percent shooting.

Lansing and Pleasant Ridge might be close geographically, but Lansing put some separation between the schools on the basketball court. The Lions (8-4) jumped out to a 24-10 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in the fifth-place game Saturday.

David Jackson and Thomas Davis were big factors in the win, as the two tied for a game-high 27 points. David Wagner scored 12 points for the Rams, who left the tournament 6-4.

Olathe Christian 69, Oskaloosa 67 (OT)

Saturday’s first game was a match-up of heart-broken teams.

Oskaloosa and Olathe Christian lost all of their games by four points or fewer in the Tonganoxie Invitational and squared off in the seventh-place game. Olathe Christian prevailed in overtime, 69-67.

Top-seeded Oskaloosa started the tournament 7-1, but left 7-4 after three defeats by a total of nine points.

Olathe Christian (14-5), the No. 2 seed, won the seventh-place game after losing its other two games on last-second shots. Kyle Kelsay and Blake Reed led the Bears with 20 and 18 points respectively, while four Warriors scored in double figures for Olathe Christian. Matthew Johansen led OCS with 20 points.
