Obituary: Gerald Walters

Services for Gerald Walters will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Wilson Funeral Home, Paola. Private burial services are planned in the Miami County Cemetery.

Mr. Walters, 73, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Tonganoxie Nursing Center. He was born May 5, 1928, in Paola, the son of Herbert and Evelyn Walters.

In 1946, he joined the U.S. Army and served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. After leaving the Army, he served for several years in the Paola National Guard.

In 1956, he began work as a mechanic for Carrothers Construction Co., Paola. He transferred in 1961 to Pemco Inc., a subsidiary of Carrothers. In 1993, he retired as equipment superintendent.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Tonganoxie, the Tonganoxie Historical Society and the American Legion in Paola.

He married Eva Rae Stanchfield in 1949 in Bentonville, Ark.

He married Gladys Thompson on July 17, 1993, in Basehor. She survives.

Survivors include two daughters, Dona Boley, Kansas City, Mo., and Christie Doherty, Paola; a son, Gary Walters, St. Louis; two stepchildren, Glen Thompson, Parkville, Mo., and Pamela Carter, Lawrence; three brothers, Paul Walters and Delbert Walters, both of Paola, Roger Walters, Lebo; two sisters, Dorothy Porter, Liberty, Mo., and Eileen Stevens, Kansas City, Kan.; two grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
