Technical fouls help boys hold off Perry-Lecompton at home
Tonganoxie's offensive output wasn't the greatest again Jan. 22, but this time it didn't have to be.
The Chieftains posted 41 points against Perry-Lecompton. The low score came one game after a 81-46 loss to Bonner Springs on Saturday in the Tonganoxie Invitational.
But this time, Tonganoxie contained its opponent, and the Chieftains won, 41-36.
Tonganoxie (6-7 overall and 5-4 in the Kaw Valley League) had a 27-23 lead at the half, but scored little in the third quarter. Tonganoxie didn't score a field goal until Jordan Glenn hit a two-pointer at the 3:06 mark. Matt Alexander's three free throws were Tonganoxie's only third-quarter points before that.
"The third quarter seems to be our nemesis," Tonganoxie coach David Walker said.
The Chieftains finished with eight points in that quarter against the Kaws, the same total they had against Bonner Springs.
But Perry-Lecompton could only muster four points, and Tonganoxie had a 30-27 lead going into the fourth.
The Kaws (5-8 and 3-6) developed other problems when senior Shawn Howard was flagged for a technical foul with about five minutes left in the game.
Perry-Lecompton coach Pat Hupfauf's team rule stipulates any player charged with a technical sits out the rest of the game. Howard, the team's leading scorer and rebounder, sat down with 13 points.
Tonganoxie had a 37-32 lead when the foul occurred. Bryan Gurss, who completed the game with 14 points, hit two free throws for the technical, and THS had its biggest lead at 39-32.
The Chieftains play De Soto on Friday in Tonganoxie's fifth straight home game. THS will now play Basehor-Linwood at home Monday. The game was rescheduled from Tuesday because of inclement weather.
