Man seriously injured in jump from vehicle
A rural Basehor man apparently leapt from a moving vehicle Tuesday morning during an argument with a woman who was driving.
John M. Swearingen III, 26, 17593 Hollingsworth Rd., was listed in serious condition late Tuesday afternoon at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. He was taken to the medical center by Life Net air ambulance following the incident, about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday.
"What we know as of right now is the victim was a passenger in a vehicle, and a female was driving," said Leavenworth County sheriff's Sgt. Charlie Yates. "Apparently, an argument had ensued, and at some point, the female driver wanted him to get out, which he did, but he did it as the vehicle was moving."
Yates estimated the vehicle was traveling at 30 mph to 35 mph in the 17300 block of Hollingsworth Rd., about 0.6 of a mile east of 179th Street.
Swearingen suffered head injuries in the incident.
Yates said he didn't anticipate any charges would result from the incident.
"Not unless something else surfaces that indicates something different," Yates said.
