Camp serves as team test
Tonganoxie High graduate Andrea Korb will get some northern exposure when she continues her basketball career this fall.
Korb will play basketball at Carleton College, an NCAA Division III school in Northfield, Minn., 40 miles south of Minneapolis.
The three-time all Kaw Valley League selection learned of the school through volleyball coaches Tiffany and Brandon Parker. The Parkers knew assistant coaches at the private school, which has an enrollment of 1,900.
Korb sent game footage to various schools in the area, and William Jewell in Liberty, Mo., recruited her, but she decided to play much farther from home.
"When I went up to visit it I just fell in love with it," Korb said.
Division III schools don't award academic scholarships, but Korb will enter the school this fall with a 4.0 high school GPA. She was also a University of Kansas honor scholar. Athletically, she earned all-area honors from the Lawrence Journal-World and started for the AAU/Missouri Valley Regional Championship team last year.
Korb also was all-KVL in volleyball and softball, but said she would get through the first year before pursuing any other sports.
Carleton is a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Knights went 46-11 the last two seasons, including a school record 24-6 this year.
Carleton also made its first two NCAA tournament appearances the last two seasons.
The Knights advanced to the tournament's second round last season and return 11 letter-winners for next season. The team finished the season No. 20 in the D3Hoops.com top 25 poll and 25th in the USA Today/Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll.
The school is a few states away, but Korb isn't worried about being that far from home.
"I think it will be a new fun experience," she said.
