Tonganoxie company chose for work at major intersection

A local contractor, Meadows Construction, has submitted the lowest bid for the upcoming intersection improvement project at U.S. Highway 24-40 and Kansas Highway 16.

Meadows Construction, owned by Larry and Lois Meadows, was one of six companies submitting bids that were opened last Wednesday, said Marty Matthews, Kansas Department of Transportation spokesman.

The lowest bids for improving the major intersection were: Meadows, $724,642; Linaweaver Construction, $781,663; and Graybeal Construction, $793,545. The highest bid was $971,480, according to City Administrator Shane Krull.

The engineer’s estimate for the project was $742,157, excluding a contingency fund and legal fees, Krull said.

“I think it will be a good fit for the community, having a local contractor,” Krull said. “And the contractor will work with us on traffic and other matters.”

The work entails widening the intersection, putting in new sidewalks, pavement markings, storm sewers, curbs and guttering, installing traffic signals, widening the road four blocks on U.S. 24-40 from Second Street to Fifth Street, and one block east and west of the intersection on Kansas Highway 16 and Fourth Street. Construction also includes applying asphalt and overlay.

The estimated contract time is 60 working days, Matthews said. Meadows’ bid has been accepted as an “as read” bid, he said, which means the firm submitted the lowest bid, but it will take a week for KDOT to confirm the winning bidder. The start date for construction will be decided in an upcoming pre-construction conference.
