Nye ponders run for county commission
First District incumbent Don Navinsky undecided about re-election bid
Leavenworth County Sheriff Herb Nye is considering a run for the county commission seat held by Don Navinsky.
"When I took office, I thought about being sheriff for 10 years and then quit and run for commission," Nye said.
Several years ago, though, he changed his mind.
"Now, I've had second thoughts," the 54-year-old sheriff said. "I think I have reached a point here at the sheriff's office that I've done as much as I can do, not that there aren't more things to do."
Nye said some personal matters will influence whether he runs against Navinsky, who is completing his second term representing the First District on the county commission.
Both men are Democrats, and if they both decided to file for the seat, they would face off in the Aug. 6 primary election. Navinsky is the only commissioner on the three-member board whose seat is up for election.
Navinsky said he hasn't decided yet whether to see a third term.
"I haven't even checked to see when the primary is," he added.
Nye said he has no grudges against Navinsky, even though the two have disagreed over several issues, including the sheriff's department budget.
"That has no bearing on it whatsoever," Nye said. "I've always gotten along with Don. Right now, in my life, I feel the sheriff's department and I have come a long way. I said I would like to be sheriff for 10 years and that's basically fulfilled."
If Nye were to run for county commission and win in the November general election he would have two years remaining in his term as sheriff.
But Nye would resign, and his replacement would be appointed by the governor.
If Nye's job comes open, Undersheriff Dave Zoellner is interested.
"I would like to be considered if that position comes open before his term is up," said Zoellner, also a Democrat.
And if Nye remains in office, Zoellner said, he plans to run for the sheriff's position.
