THS eyeing home field

By Shawn Linenberger - | May 8, 2002

Tonganoxie will have home-field advantage throughout the 4A regional tournament Monday and Tuesday.

The Chieftains should be the home team on the score card most of the time as well.

Although regional seedings come out at 10 a.m. today, Tonganoxie will have either a No. 2 or No. 3 seed when regionals begin Monday at the Tonganoxie Recreation Commission ball fields.

The expected higher seed comes after Tonganoxie won three of its last four games.

THS, which had dropped four straight before an April 30 doubleheader against Lansing, used a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh in game one for a 5-4 victory against the Lions.

“That was a key win for us,” THS coach Mark Mall said. “It assured us of a higher seed against Lansing.”

In game one, THS was down 4-2 in the seventh with the bases loaded and two out. Senior Andrea Korb reached on an error, helping Tonganoxie cut the lead to 4-3. In the next at-bat, senior Kim Newton’s single up the middle scored two more for the win. Tonganoxie didn’t help its own cause, committing five errors in the first game.

Lansing responded in game two, scoring five runs in the first and two runs in the seventh for a 7-0 victory. The Chieftains, though, ensured themselves a higher seed with the first win and a doubleheader sweep of De Soto, which ended the regular season at 1-19.

Tonganoxie scored 30 runs in two games against the Wildcats, and Katie Jeannin hurled a one-hitter in game one and a two-hitter in game two.
