Obituary: Mabel M. Pettengill
Services for Mabel M. Pettengill, Linwood, were held Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence.
Mrs. Pettengill, 95, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at the Tonganoxie Nursing Center. She was born May 12, 1907, in Greeley, Colo., the daughter of John J. Beaman and Mary Myrtle (Dent) Beaman.
She lived in the Linwood community from 1933 to 1997. She was a homemaker. She was an active 4-H leader with the Meadowlark 4-H Club in Leavenworth County. She was a member of the Happy Hour Club, Mackey Merrymaker Club, Villa Eden Community Club, Reno Township Election Board and the Kent Homemakers Home Demonstration Unit.
She married Carl A. Torneden on Sept. 24, 1933. He died Nov. 8, 1949. She married Frank Pettengill on May 21, 1951. He died April 7, 1981.
Survivors include two sons, Carl Torneden, Overbrook, and John Pettengill, Linwood; two daughters, Myrtle Jones, Tonganoxie, and Nadine Garrison, Oskaloosa; a step-daughter, Myrle Leavitt, Linwood; two sisters, Ruth Dent, Lawrence, and Grace Wrightsman, Phoenix; 16 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren and 23 step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two step-children, Walter F. Pettengill, and Helen Mills.
