Obituary: John D. Shirley
Services for John D. Shirley, 73, Oberlin, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oberlin, with the Rev. Matthew Vazhappily officiating. Burial will be in Oberlin Cemetery.
Mr. Shirley died Monday, March 31, 2003, at his home. He was born June 24, 1929, in Stockville, Neb., the son of Edward and Marie (Waggoner) Shirley. He grew up and attended schools in McCook, Neb.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a mechanic and truck driver. Mr. Shirley was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oberlin.
He married Doris F. Scott on March 21, 1947. They later divorced.
Survivors include his former wife, Doris Fringer, Oberlin; two sons, John J. Shirley, Livermore, Calif., and James Shirley, Tonganoxie; five daughters, Deanna Castle, Oberlin, Carolyn Shirley, Colby, Chris Walston, Oberlin, Patty Steinmetz, Two Buttes, Colo., and Donna Futrell, Salt Lake City; a brother, Dick Shirley, Salt Lake City; and four sisters, Pauline Evans, Folsom, Calif., Jane Blume, Indianola, Neb., Pat Idigpio, Marietta, Okla., and Rita Chambers, Folsom, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A son, Michael, died in 1967.
A vigil service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin. Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
