Baseball team in win column

By Shawn Linenberger - | Apr 16, 2003

It took six games, but Tonganoxie High coach Sean Randall registered his first victory as a Chieftain on Monday, taking the second of two games against Piper.

Tonganoxie is now 1-5 on the season.

“That was just awesome,” Randall said. “It felt great. I felt more happy for the kids, not me, just because they deserved it.”

That 6-3 victory at home seemed improbable seven innings earlier. Piper dominated THS 17-1 in the first game as the Pirates’ bats were on fire.

The Chieftains, however, answered in game two and matched last year’s win total with the victory against the Pirates.

“That just shows you what happens,” Randall said. “That builds character.”

The Chieftains allowed 20 runs in the doubleheader, but a tougher defense in game two helped nab the win.

“We played solid defense,” Randall said. “Nick Volk just pitched phenomenal.”

Monday’s games came after Tonganoxie dropped a doubleheader Thursday at Basehor-Linwood. The Bobcats won, 7-2 and 16-6.

Randall said his team played well against BLHS despite the scores.

“We just got unlucky those two doubleheaders,” Randall said. “Nothing went our way, but I think we did earn some respect in that game from them.”

Tonganoxie can extend its winning streak Thursday when the Chieftains visit Shawnee and take on Mill Valley.

“With this win against Piper, these kids are ready,” Randall said. “I could see after the game that they’re hungry.

“They’re finally realizing that they’re a good team and have some possibilities of winning some games.”
