The Mirror is a winner.

In the 2003 Best of Kansas Newspapers contest, The Mirror newspaper was awarded the Sweepstakes Award in its division. The Sweepstakes award is presented to the newspapers that earn the most points in the contest. The Mirror’s showing was strong in the annual contest, sponsored by the Kansas Press Association.

This year, The Mirror was awarded five first-place honors, six second places, nine third-place awards and six honorable mentions Saturday night during KPA’s convention in Topeka.

“The results of this year’s contest are a testament to the hard work of the news staff members of The Mirror,” said Caroline Trowbridge, editor and publisher. “I have the honor of working staff for best use of photos, design and layout excellence and general excellence.

“Clearly, the judges thought The Mirror publishes a complete package for its readers and advertisers each week,” Trowbridge said. “We strive to improve each day, and we have fun doing it. Shawn and Lisa are such strong writers and photographers, and its gratifying to see their work recognized.”

The newspaper and its staff won these second-place awards: feature writing, sports column writing, news and writing excellence, feature photography, sports photography and feature package.

Third-place honors were given for youth coverage, education coverage, news photography, sports photography, special section, editorial pages, sports pages, best front page and Web site.

And the judges gave The Mirror honorable mention for feature writing, sports writing, sports feature writing, feature photography, editorial writing and photo package.

At the Kansas Press Association convention, Trowbridge was re-appointed to a one-year term as weekly newspaper membership director, a post she’s held since 2001.
