Our View: Take time to visit the fair next week

By Staff | Aug 6, 2003

Next week, Tonganoxie plays host to the annual Leavenworth County Fair.

And this year’s fair will provide something of interest for just about everyone.

While the carnival, demolition derby and wide variety of booths all are worthwhile, it is the work of the 4-H and FFA members that makes the Leavenworth County Fair an end-of-summer event that everyone in the county should attend.

For months, youngsters throughout Leavenworth County have prepared for fair week. They’ve nurtured and groomed animals. They’ve constructed or carefully purchased clothing. They’ve honed their public speaking skills.

And they’ve become better people during their many hours of work on the fair.

David Todd, president of the Leavenworth County Fair Board, said that someone asked him recently, “What do kids learn in 4-H?” Todd said he didn’t know where to begin. And that’s understandable.

The skills children acquire in 4-H are so numerous and so wide-ranging, it likely would be easier to determine what youngsters do not learn in 4-H. The list would be much shorter.

So if you have time, visit the fair next week. And if you visit the fair, take a moment to watch some of the youngsters in action. Check out the rabbit show or the rocket launch. Take a minute to talk with 4-H’ers and members of FFA about what they’ve prepared for this year’s fair.

Chances are, you’ll be amazed at their dedication to their projects and their work ethics.
