Obituary: Freida L. Britt

Services for Freida L. Britt, 93, Kansas City, Kan., were last Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kan. Burial was in Bonner Springs Cemetery.

Mrs. Britt died Aug. 3, 2003, at the Manor of Kansas City, Kan. She was born Aug. 29, 1909, in Bee Bee, Ark., the daughter of John B. and Mary Ellen Vollentine.

As a young child, she traveled in a covered wagon to Tonganoxie. She was raised on a farm and graduated from Tonganoxie High School, where she lettered in basketball and was a member of the all-state women’s team.

She moved after high school to Kansas City, Mo., where she lived in a rooming house with her sister while working for the telephone company. Later, she worked for Folgers Coffee, then Colgate Palmolive Co., retiring in 1972. She was one of the first residents of Veterans Quindaro Homes. She lived there independently for 58 years, until the age of 92. She was an active member of the Immanuel Baptist Church, as well as a volunteer careworker in the church’s nursery.

She was preceded in death by her first husband of 21 years, Charles B. Albers, her second husband of 17 years, Earl F. Britt, and a grandson.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Lynn Albers, Cedar Park, Texas, and Robert B. Albers, Kansas City, Kan.; a daughter, Sandra L. Mance, Basehor; a sister, Bea Black, Tonganoxie; a brother, Marshall Vollentine, St. Joseph, Mo.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
