Teams set times for first practices

By Shawn Linenberger - | Aug 13, 2003

Fall sports practices are here.

Starting Monday, Kansas high schools kick off the 2003 campaign with their first practices.

At Tonganoxie High, volleyball practice for varsity and junior varsity will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., while the freshman team will practice from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Cross country practice will begin at 6:30 a.m. Monday and 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, while practices after that will start after school.

Chieftain soccer will have its first practice under new coach Luke Denney from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., while the football team will start with a two-a-day practice — from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The schedules will be subject to change after that.

School begins Tuesday with a half-day session and will be full-time after that.

In McLouth, cross country practices begin at 6 a.m., as do football practices. New Bulldogs coach Harry Hester’s gridiron squad will practice from 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., although athletics director Tom Pierce said expected high temperatures could push afternoon practices back.

“We might have to go to a heat schedule in the afternoon,” Pierce said. “We might have to move to a 6 or 6:30 start.”

New volleyball coach Rachel Webb will begin her first practice at 3:30 p.m.
