Warrior basketball team ends year with 13-1 mark
Tonganoxie Junior High finished its eighth-grade girls basketball season by winning the Piper tournament last week. The Warriors finished the season at 13-1.
TJHS defeated Piper, 30-18, in the semifinals and then dropped Basehor-Linwood with a narrow 35-34 victory in the finals.
The Warriors were in control most of the game against Piper. Christy Weller led the team in steals with six and assists with four. Ann Erickson and Ashley Lohman led the team in rebounding with seven and five boards respectively. Scoring for Tonganoxie were: Elizabeth Baska 12 points, Hannah Herrstrom 7, Lohman 5, Erickson 4, Traci Hileman 2.
The final game of the year provided an exciting end to the season. Basehor-Linwood was seeking revenge for their only lost of the season, while Tonganoxie was looking to extend its unbeaten streak. TJHS also had starter Ashli Koch unable to play because of illness and three other players playing while battling sicknesses. The Warriors had a slow start and trailed by five at the half.
But in the second half, the Warriors fought back with strong defense. Baska and Lohman led the team in steals with three each. Baska and Weller led the team in assists with five and three respectively. Scoring for the Warriors were: Lohman 10, Herrstrom 8, Baska 8, Hileman 7, Erickson 3.
"I was really proud of the girls in the championship game," coach John Korb said. "With Koch gone, I felt we had some problems matching up with the Bulldogs."
However, Korb said, various players filled the void and helped the Warriors clinch the tournament title.
