Holding court

About 120 local youths tested their skills at the annual Chieftain basketball camp Monday in the Tonganoxie High School gymnasium.

The camp, which is sponsored by the THS boys and girls basketball teams, gives instruction to elementary school students. THS coaches and players, along with TJHS coaches Phil Jeannin and Mark Mall assisted campers at the annual event.

The clinic always falls on the first day of high school practice after Christmas, which usually is Dec. 29.

“We’ve had it just about every day of the week,” said THS coach David Walker.

With 120 campers, this clinic marked the highest pre-registration since Walker came to Tonganoxie.

That allows many of Walker’s and Randy Kraft’s girls team members to be teachers instead of pupils for a day.

“It’s a real humbling experience for us in that those kids look up to the players and see them on the courts on Tuesdays and Fridays,” Walker said. “It also allows older kids to share their gift of basketball with those players.”
