Emporia State University has awarded scholarships to academically outstanding college freshmen, transfer and continuing students, who will begin or resume their college careers at ESU this fall. Jami Kay Angell, a freshman from Tonganoxie, received the Joseph M. and I. Peach and PEO Club scholarships.

Death: Thelma Lou Ratliff, 85, Tonganoxie, died Nov. 30, 1993.

Army Pvt. 1 Brett D. Haynes has completed training at the U.S. Army Infantry School in Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

Lenahan re-issues “Yesteryears” pictorial history: (Picture) Say you’ve got over 200 photos of your old hometown, over 90 more on slide format, and a lot of people telling you they’d like to see it all put down in a book. What do you do? (John Lenahan re-issued his 47-page pictorial history after an extended absence. In 1981, 1,500 copies were printed and shortly thereafter, accounted for.) Meseraull’s second press run of the book was in November, with 500 copies available.

25 years ago: Dec. 6, 1978

McLouth News: Word has been received of the death of Frances Yenice, 65, of Mulberry. Miss Yenice was librarian at the McLouth High School five years.

Deaths: Mrs. Helen Katherine Bartolac Conard, 53, Kansas City, Mo., died Sunday. A prayer service for J. Leonard Carpenter, 69, Holton, formerly of Tonganoxie, was at 10:30 Saturday in Leavenworth. Mr. Carpenter died Nov. 30, 1978.

Mrs. George (Ruth) Peters arrived home early Tuesday morning after a vacation trip to Treasure Island, Fla., where she was the guest of her brother-in-law, Clifford Peters.

A surprise birthday party was held Sunday for Mr. Harold Davis at his home. Mr. Davis was celebrating his 83rd birthday.

Mrs. Jack Whitford, Mrs. Bernard Uhlrich and Helen Schilling attended the “Christmas Oratorio” held Monday evening at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kansas City, Mo.

Word has been received here that Mrs. Dorothy Stolfus, daughter of Mrs. Carrie Walker and the late August Walker, passed away in Bonner Springs, and her services were held this week.

A farewell coffee is planned Sunday for Bill and Diana Rader and family during the Sunday School hour. The Raders are moving to Sioux Falls, S.D., this month.

50 years ago: Dec. 17, 1953

The new tourist court, at the 24-40 curve northwest of the city, is nearing completion. The twin buildings are being built by twin brothers, Earl and Clyde Bailey.

Death: Funeral services for Mrs. Jessie Barton, Tonganoxie, sister of the late Harry D. Turner, were held Tuesday afternoon at Quisenberry Chapel.

Birth: Mr. and Mrs. George Spiero of Wantagh, Long Island, N.Y., are the parents of a daughter, born Dec. 12. They have given her the name Cynthia Diane. Mrs. Spiero was the former Lola Campbell of Tonganoxie.

Mrs. Don Klinkenberg entertained with a birthday party for her daughter, Donnita Jo’s fourth birthday. The invited guests were Carol Ann Trackwell, Susie Cook, Janie Mills, Jimmy Johnson, Stevie Hughes and Ronnie Conrad.

The Tonganoxie fire department made a run Tuesday afternoon to the Jones Hotel building, where a flue fire was put out without much damage.

Linwood: Mrs. William Showalter and infant daughter returned to their home Monday from Lawrence hospital. Mrs. Ernest Pritchard and infant daughter returned from the Lawrence hospital Tuesday.

75 years ago: Nov. 29, 1928

Deaths: Hugh Bernard Jamison, 65, Tonganoxie, was found dead in bed at his home Saturday morning. Dr. Joseph Skaggs, coroner, was called and announced that death was due to heart failure. Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Dole, who died Thursday in Kansas City, were held Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Mary Allison Dole was 53 years, 6 months, and 12 days old.

Mrs. J. Freienmuth’s Brother Dead. Dr. Henry Ernst was born at Lawrence, Oct. 10, 1872, and died at Roswell, N.M., Nov. 6, 1928; Benton Hubbel, 76, former resident of Tonganoxie, died at his home at Lawrence Friday night, after a long illness. Mr. Hubbel was a brother of Eddie Hubbel, who was the first person buried in Hubbel Hill cemetery, after whom the cemetery was named.

Tonganoxie Knot Hole: He: “My ancestors came over in the Mayflower.” She: “It’s mighty lucky for you that they did, for the immigration laws are much stricter now.”

Coal Ridge: Several neighbors of this community butchered this week.

Pleasant Prairie: Mrs. Harry Sorensen was called to Kansas City by the death of her mother, Thursday. Funeral services were held in Tonganoxie Saturday afternoon at the Friends Church.

Births: Dr. J.E. Van Epps reports the following births: Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Fulk, a son, Oct. 11, to whom they have given the name of James Augustus; and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lenahan, a son, Oct. 22, to whom they have given the name of Robert Leo.

100 years ago: Dec. 10, 1903

Mrs. Laming received word Monday afternoon that her mother Mrs. Letitia Foster was not expected to live and she and Mr. Laming started at once for Kansas City, but before they arrived at the home the mother was dead. Mrs. Foster was 70 years old and the cause of her death was bronchitis.

From Routes 3 and 4: Mr. and Mrs. D. Wiley announce the birth of a girl Nov. 17.

The Mound district has purchased a new bell for the school house.

John Dessery’s gave a corn husking bee last Thursday, and a dance at night.

Ivan Sechrest now carries a new nine and a half-pound male. The arrival was Friday.

An infant child of Mr. and Mrs. John Thiry living across Stranger southeast of here, died Wednesday of last week. The funeral was last Thursday and the burial was in Hubbel Hill cemetery.

John Evans is organizing a party to leave about the 16th to look at western Kansas land. The destination will be Oakley.

A sensational report to the effect that one of the Mark brothers had been cut in two by a circular saw, was afloat last week, but there was nothing to it.

The three Doege brothers have purchased from L.E. Green the 228 acre farm adjoining Mayginnis school house near Hoge. The consideration was $10,500. Geo. Erwine will occupy the place the coming year.
