Losing streak reaches No. 7 with MV loss
Some brotherly love for Tonganoxie didn't snap the Chieftains' recent slide.
Jacob and Justin Walker each scored a team-high 12 points against Mill Valley on Friday, but the No. 13 Jaguars answered with three players in double figures as the Shawnee school handed Tonganoxie its sixth straight defeat with a 65-50 decision.
"You can't spot someone 14 in this league and win," THS coach David Walker said, referring to the Chieftains' 20-6 deficit after the first quarter.
Take away Tonganoxie's slow start and the Chieftains had a ball game. THS opened the second with a 7-2 run and cut the lead to 10 at the half, 35-25.
Tonganoxie assembled another run to open the third quarter, using a second 7-2 spurt to cut the lead to six at 37-32. Mill Valley, however, smothered Tonganoxie for the remainder of the quarter with its own 13-2 run.
The Chieftains did outscore the Jags, 16-15, in the fourth, but the slight advantage didn't prevent Tonganoxie from dropping to 4-12 overall and 2-8 in the Kaw Valley League.
"The worst thing we can do is start pointing fingers," Walker said. "The kids continue to work hard. One of these days we can put it together."
Brad Reischman provided paint points with eight Friday, while Derek Sparks and Luke McCarty each had four. Chad Turner and Billy Baska both had three points, while Jon Gripka and Joe Calovich both had two.
After a road game Tuesday in Perry against Perry-Lecompton, Tonganoxie finishes out the regular season with three contests: Friday at Lansing, Tuesday against Immaculata and Feb. 28 at Bonner Springs.
Joe Calovich broke out with 24 points, but Tonganoxie fell apart in the fourth quarter in a 67-54 loss to Piper. The game stayed tight throughout the first three quarters and the Chieftains had a 37-36 lead going into the fourth, but Piper erupted for 31 in that period and closed out the win. Shane Howard also was in double figures for THS with 12. The Pirates had seven players score, including Mike Simmons with 22 and Daniel Rezin with 18.
