Obituaries: Dr. Katharine Virginia Bickford Smith
Services for Dr. Katharine Virginia Bickford Smith, 71, Salina, were Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Oberlin United Methodist Church, Oberlin. Burial was in Oberlin Cemetery.
Dr. Bickford Smith died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina. She was born Feb. 24, 1931, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Donnel and Catherine (Kenney) Pearson.
She was raised in Tonganoxie. She graduated with a bachelor of science in nursing from Kansas University, a master of science from Fort Hays State University, and a doctorate from Kansas State University. She began her career as school nurse for Unified School District 294 in 1970, and began teaching at Fort Hays in 1980. She was chair of the special education department at Fort Hays from 1988 to 1995; chaired the teacher education department, until 1996; was affirmative action officer at Fort Hays from 1988 to 1990; and received the 1989 Pilot Award. She was actively involved in the Council for Exceptional Children and served as president of the Kansas chapter.
After her retirement, she lived in El Dorado and Salina.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Kenneth Bickford in 1959, and Galen Smith in 1992; and a brother, Richard Pearson.
Survivors include two sons, Brian Bickford, Salina, and Brice Bickford, Olathe; a stepson, Craig Smith; two daughters, Cecilia Goebel, El Dorado, and Elizabeth Estes, Baton Rouge, La.; two stepdaughters, Gwen Graham, Chesterton, Ind., and Kim Nichols, Marysville, Calif.; a brother, John Pearson of LaJolla, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Fort Hays State University Endowment Association.
