Aunt Norie’s Sewing Room

By Eleanor Mckee - | Jul 9, 2003

We’d run out of anything for our recuperating 12-year-old son to do, when I remembered something you had written, Aunt Norie, about your sorting and saving buttons. So, tired of reading, puzzles, and, yes, even TV, I had buttons a plenty to sort. He really went for it, sorting them first by color then in matched sets, and onto a needle threaded with quilting thread (stronger than regular thread). Now it’s so easy for me to find the buttons that I need.

She also has another button story to tell. It was an estate auction, her husband had overheard this, “Oh I’d have gone to $75 for this one button alone.” The former owner had clipped and saved buttons for years. Many of us also do, or should save those buttons as we toss out “rags” — clothing outgrown, worn out, etc.

Button collecting is an exciting hobby for many and there are some beautiful and rare ones out there. Many crafters now use those buttons for earrings, broaches and such. The same goes for glass marbles. Many people collect them.

If that gentleman could see through that glass jug, one button worth $75, it probably had several mates. Oh yes, they said he paid $47.50 for that jug of buttons.

If you are a collector of anything, garage sales and auction sales are the places to check out.

Keep cool now — until next week. Love and God bless. Aunt Norie, P.O. Box 265, Tonganoxie, 66086-0265.
