Braves set for AFA nationals
More than 70 softball teams will converge on Lawrence this week.
The Tonganoxie Braves will field one of those teams.
With 42 squads in the 14U division and 31 in the 16U division, the Clinton Park Softball Complex and Youth Soccer Fields Inc. will have its share of action this week with the American Fastpitch Association nationals.
The tournament began with opening ceremonies Tuesday night at the Free State High School gymnasium.
The Braves, who are competing in the 14U B tourney, compete in pool play at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. today and 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
A double-elimination tournament then gets underway after pool play games Thursday and concludes Saturday.
Tonganoxie will open the tournament with the Lenexa Monarchs and then play the Edna Woodshed and the Potau, Okla., Baseburners.
Braves coach Pat Albert said that although his team is 28-21, Tonganoxie has played primarily against 14U A teams this summer.
"We haven't played any B tournaments hardly at all because we needed to get better," Albert said about the Braves, who are playing together for the fourth straight season. "I think our girls are improving all through the year.
"I think we're probably playing better than at anytime during the year. Hopefully that will mean something good for this week."
