Piper just misses state softball title again
Piper will have to wait at least one more year to put its second state softball trophy in its awards' case.
The Pirates completed the season as the Class 4A runners-up for the second consecutive year. As they did against Hayden (Topeka) last season, the Pirates lost this year by one run to Ottawa, 4-3.
Piper finished the season 24-2. The Cyclones won state with a 19-5 record.
PHS now has six state tournament appearances to its credit. The Pirates went to state for four consecutive years from 1993-96. Piper took second every year except 1994 when the Pirates won their lone state title.
The state baseball tournament didn't include any Kaw Valley League members in its field, but the state champion came from the same regional tournament that Tonganoxie participated in.
Kansas City's Bishop-Ward won its first-round matchup with Andover-Central with a 10-0 decision in five innings.
The Cyclones then defeated Concordia, 2-1 before easily handling Haven, 10-2 in the state finals. Ward ended the season at 22-4.
