Obituary: George Joseph Corriston

Services for George Joseph Corriston, Leavenworth, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Leavenworth.

Mr. Corriston, 58, died March 2, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Leavenworth. He was born Jan. 29, 1945, in Leavenworth, the son of Oka and Richard Corriston.

He served in the U.S. Army from July 19, 1965, to July 18, 1967. He served in Vietnam 11 months and 28 days.

He received the Vietnam campaign medal, the air medal, the combat infantry man badge, national defense service medal, army commendation medal, Vietnam service medal with the bronze service star, and the good conduct medal.

On April 26, 1969, he married Judy M. New of Leavenworth. He worked as an upholsterer for 40 years and he also owned an upholstery shop with his brother, Richard Corriston. Later, he worked at Murphy’s Furniture in Lawrence.

He served in his community as a little league coach from 1978 to 1982.

Survivors include two daughters, Diane Gordon, Kennard, Neb., and Denise Martinez, Corpus Christi, Texas; a son, David Corriston, Leavenworth; brothers, Richard Corriston, Leaven-worth, John Corriston, Rich Hill, Mo., Edward Corriston, Macksville, Kan., Joseph Corriston, Port Orchard, Wash., Theodore Corriston, Leavenworth, and Michael Corriston, Easton; sisters, Dorothy Coates, Leavenworth, Rose Garrett, Leavenworth, Mary Finneran, Easton, Geraldine LaFontaine, Leavenworth, Helen Vandruff, Tonganoxie, Nadine Price, Leavenworth, and Deborah Roediger, Atchison; and six grandchildren.
