True, older machines didn’t do that. Most new machines now do zigzag, which requires a larger hole in the throat plate. As a result, soft fabrics and knits seem to easily pull down into the mechanism and jam. To avoid this, hold both upper and lower threads to the side of the presser foot for the first few stitches while you begin sewing the seam.
