Two-vehicle accident kills local resident
A Tonganoxie man was killed Saturday after his vehicle collided with another at the intersection of 155th Street and U.S. Highway 24-40 in Basehor.
At 5:40 p.m. Saturday, Blaine E. Reed, 35, Tonganoxie, was driving west on U.S. 24-40 when he failed to stop for a red light at the intersection, according to a Leavenworth County sheriff's report. A vehicle driven by Ronald W. Richardson, 54, Basehor, was coming from the north on 155th Street when it collided with Reed's vehicle.
Reed, who was not wearing a seat belt, was flown by air ambulance to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., where he died in the emergency room.
Richardson received upper-body burns and minor injuries after his car caught on fire following the crash. The Basehor man was released Monday from the KU Medical Center, where he was taken for treatment. It was undetermined whether Richardson was wearing a seat belt.
Fairmont Township Fire Department volunteers responded to the burning vehicle and quickly extinguished the fire.
The Leavenworth County sheriff's department is investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the accident.
Leavenworth County Emergency Medical Services, Lifenet Helicopter, Basehor and Bonner Springs police departments also assisted at the scene.
